Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, locally known as Wright-Patt, is steeped in aviation history and one of the largest Air Force bases in the country. It houses the headquarters of the Air Force Materiel Command, which is responsible for the development, procurement, and maintenance of the USAF's aerospace systems. Wright-Patterson AFB is also the home of the Air Force Institute of Technology (a post graduate school), the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the National Museum of the Air Force. Wright-Patterson AFB owes its namesake to the Wright brothers and Frank Patterson. The Wright brothers used an 85 acre pasture adjacent to the current base as their testing grounds during early flight development. Frank Patterson was the son of the founder of NCR corporation who died in 1918 when his plane crashed on the Wright Brother's field. Today the base is the largest employer at one location in the state of Ohio, largely due to the Materiel Command. The USAF Materiel Command receives the largest portion of the Air Force's budget. Its mission is to develop the United States air based weapons of the future and to refine those of the present. The National Air Force Museum is not to be missed while visiting Wright-Patt. The museum houses rare aircraft from the begging of aviation to the present. Over 1.2 million visitors a year enjoy the 300+ aircraft and associated exhibits on display. Notable exhibits include Bockscar - the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan in World War II, the original Air Force One, and an extensive collection of Air Force uniforms.
